from a military standpoint and with, also, the role with the cia and what he did say is from day one we knew it was a terrorist attack. there was no question about it. you you don't bring automatic weapons and rpgs and mortars to a so-called demonstration. still, there are some questions that are yet to be answered about the planning of this. whether it was done over a period of time, or, whether it was truly a spontaneous reaction. there is no indication now that it was anything other than a planned attack. >> chris: do you have an understanding as to why the talking points changed over the course of that first week? the white house said yesterday they made one change in the talking points and that was to change the word consulate to diplomatic facility. >> it was kind of interesting, chris. at the hearing we had on thursday and friday, we had every leader of the intelligence community there, including folks from the state department, the fbi, everybody there was asked, do you know who made these changes and nobody knew. the only entity that reviewed the talking points that was not the

of the cia in september of 2011. in a statement late this afternoon the president thanked petraeus for his service adding, quote, i have the outmost confidence in acting director michael morel and the men and women who work every day to keep our nation safe. going forward, my thoughts and prays are with dave and holly petraeus who have done so much to help military families that their own work. petraeus took every the cia in september of 2011. of course, the political implications of all of this cannot be overlooked. the obama administration was already under intense scrutiny following the benghazi attack and possible leaks of intelligence information from operations in yemen. new questions now likely are to surface whether or not petraeus' affair may have compromised his position over the last years. >> there is also the issue of the fiscal cliff. both president obama and house speaker john boehner today came out warning the consequences of not reaching a deal would be devastating to the u.s. economy but they don't have a lot of time here. >> no, they don't. the president spoke on this to

the new acting head of the cia would come and testify. that was unacceptable to the hill and eventually everybody thought that they better have general patraeus go to the hill and talk about not only the investigation that he did but also the time line of what really took place there. we've had some confusing stories that i think there are people on the hill and people in the country that would like to know what happened. we lost four people and there have been a whole variety of stories about just exactly what happened of how it happened and when it happened. general patraeus is the one who can provide clarity to that. i think his appearance was essential. and i'm glad he's doing it earlier rather than later. >> my last question and we'll move on. it seems that congress members and two former congress members yourself, seem to be upset the fbi was doing this whole investigation or knew what he knew. and they weren't told. can you fill me in on the role of congress as a sitting body. might there be hearings into all of these e-mails between the top general in afghanistan and general pat
